Cardiovasular Surgeon Mike Booth Retires After 30 Years of Service to the Community

After thirty years of service to the community, cardiovasular surgeon Mike Booth reached a milestone by making retirement a reality. His last day of providing care to patients at CHI St. Alexius Health Heart and Lung Clinic was June 28 and a retirement celebration held last Friday brought together many family members, friends and health care cohorts to celebrate the landmark event.
Although he is retired, through the next year he will continue his work as the Dean of the Southwest Campus of the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences located in Bismarck, a position he's held since 2014.Dr. Booth has been a faithful participant with the North Dakota Medical Association by serving as Councillor (2003-07), Speaker of the House (2006-07), Secretary-Treasurer (2007-09), Chairman of NDMA Council (2009-11), Vice President (2009-11) and President (2011-13). In 2015 he began serving as the AMA Alternate Delegate - a position held up to retirement.
Throughout his career, he was a member of many organizations: the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons (Fellow), American College of Cardiology (Fellow), American College of Chest Physicians (Fellow), American Medical Association, Association for Surgical Education, Society of Endovascular Specialists and the Heart Rhythm Society.
He served on many committees, including Laser Safety, Critical Care Committee, Credentials Committee, Operating Room Committee, Department of Surgery and the Medical Executive Committee at CHI St. Alexius. At the UND School of Medicine, he served on the Clinical Sciences Curriculum Subcommittee, the Medical Curriculum Committee (ex-officio), Campus Dean’s Committee, UND Center for Family Medicine Advisory Committee, the Search committee, Dean of Medicine, 2015, the Search committee, Chairman of Internal Medicine, 2015-16 and the Committee on Promotion and Tenure (Chair) Department of Surgery.
Dr. Booth has an outstanding record of community service, apart from his specific identification as a physician. He has served the Bismarck community for decades, including his service on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Valley Historical Society from 1996 to now, and his service to the Boy Scouts from 2000-2010. Through his service to the Missouri Valley Historical Society, Dr. Booth was instrumental in enriching Buck Stop junction and preserving the history of the Missouri River Valley and the surrounding area.
Because of his outstanding commitment to medicine and community service, he received the 2018 NDMA Physician Community and Professional Services Award.The award is recognized as North Dakota’s most prestigious physician award and since its inception in 1977, has been awarded to forty-three distinguished physicians across the state.
